Born into nobility in Az – younger son in a minor noble family – set onto the sailing path (eye to command of course – like many young nobles) at a young age. Quickly rising in the ranks he is captain of a ship when the war breaks out with Kordaava. Young Argent is smuggled to his ship and he departs Az. Changing the ship’s identity, he becomes a ship for hire sailing the known seas, training Argent in the ways of sailing, command, and swordplay – of which he is an expert.
Disaster strikes Uthred and his ship at age 45 – his ship is attacked by pirates and Uthred is injured in the fight. The ship barely escapes when a Privateer vessel happens upon the fight. The ship is lost and Uthred recovers in Port Kar. It is at this time that Argent becomes a Privateer – getting some revenge for the attack on his home.
Uthred uses his life’s saving to become a moneylender in Port Kar. Slowly falling out of touch with Argent as he continues his life on the sea. He does keep tabs on Argent – as he sees him leave Privateering and get entangled in the underground of criminal activity in Port Kar. Like a shadow never quite seen….
After a less-than-successful run as a “banker” – Uthred buys 3 merchant ships and uses his knowledge of the sea and his connections in the ports of the empire to run a small merchant company. When Argent moves to Kansk – Uthred, ever the shadow, follows him there, and takes this opportunity to get out of the merchant business. He makes no profit on the exit, selling the business for just enough to cover his debts.
Observing the struggling entrepreneur at the Golden Flask, Uthred decides to step out of the shadows and reunites with his (as he really sees him) errant son. After having lived a legend, Uthred has wealth in experience, but little coin other than some decent personal gear.
